Gene Wilder began dating Mary Joan Schutz after a few months split with Mary Mercier. Schutz was a dear friend of his sister. Katharine is the daughter of Schutz from her previous marriage. So she uses to spend time with the couple when they were dating.
A strong bond was transformed between Katharine and Gene Wilder. One time she called him ‘Dad, ‘ and Gene felt amazing and was in aww.
It also became strong determination for him to marry Schutz and the couple got married on October 27, 1967. After that Gene officially adopted Katharine as a daughter.
Sad Separation of Gene, Katharine and Schutz
All three lived happily together for seven years, but afterward, things went wrong and sad. The reason was unfaithfulness of Gene Wilder.
There were rumors about him being unfaithful to Schutz and dating his co-star Madeline Kahn from Young Frankenstein movie. Later on, the truth was revealed that Gene was dating another co-star Teri Garr, who is currently 69 years old.
Katharine couldn’t accept this, and while being disgusted from her father’s unfaithfulness, she decided to leave him and broke all contacts with him.
Back in 2002, Gene appeared on the Larry King’s show and in an interview, he revealed that he lost his relationship with his daughter when she was 23 years old. Katharine Wilder broke all contacts with Gene.
Gene Wrote a Book and Had Hope Till The End
Later on, Gene Wilder wrote a book “Kiss Me Like a Stranger” that was published in 2005. In an interview with New York Daily News, he opened up and talked freely about his daughter.
He was obsessed with having all the attention to himself, and it became too crowded for him that he couldn’t share that space with anyone. Not even with Katharine whom he loved dearly.
Gene wanted his beloved daughter Katharine to read his book. He said, “If she does read my book, I hope it will explain some things that she didn’t want to understand.”
As a father, he had the enormous love for his daughter, and he held hope till the end that she would talk to him one day, but she never did.
Katharine, The Only Child of Gene Wilder
Gene was married four times but despite that Katharine was his only daughter that he loved dearly. After a decade of the finalization of the divorce between Mary Joan Schutz and Gene Wilder, Gene got married to his third wife Gilda Radner in 1984.
But the couple couldn’t have their own child. The reason behind it was that Gilda Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and she was being treated for infertility.
Gilda and Gene eventually separated after a couple of years, and Gene married to Karen Webb Boyer in 1991. The couple was living a good life until Gene passed away.
Gene Wilder loved his daughter very much, but his one mistake separated them both. I believe it was a quite big mistake. But Katharine was always remained near to his heart despite being his biological child that makes her a special daughter of Gene Wilder.
We can only hope that Katharine reads the book of his father and forgives him. May his soul rest in peace.
